Eisenbeis 1 Courtney Eisenbeis Professor Otto Composition II 4 October 2015 Similarities and Differences Between War Stories The stories Soldiers Home by Ernest Hemingway, and The Things They Carried by Tim OBrien both concern war tragedies and focus on the physical, mental, and emotional points of the lifestyle of war. Tim OBrien, the author and narrator of The Things They Carried, describes the physical, mental, and emotional things the American soldiers carried with them during the Vietnam War. Throughout the story Tim tells what each soldier carries and why. Each character also describes what they experience from their perspective. Ernest Hemingway, the author of Soldiers Home, told a story about the main character, Kerbs, who went to war for two years. When he returned, no one was interested in congratulating him for being a war hero. At first he did not want to talk about his war experiences, but as time went on and he did, and people were not interested in his actualities. His stories were true, but not what anyone wanted to listen to. In order to get people to listen, he had to make up false parts of his stories to make them appeal to the town. OBrien and Hemingway share similar themes about war era stories, and similar styles in war soldiers point of view, but in contrast, OBrien focuses on the the physical, mental, and emotional problems in oneself, while Hemingway focuses on the emotional aspect of coming home to a not so thankful town. While both stories have a different setting, they both focus on the main point of the effects of war on the soldiers and what they go through during and after war. In The Things Eisenbeis 2 They Carried, Obrien talks about the specific things the soldiers carried such as letters to one soldier signed Love, Martha, and the list of items carried by most all soldiers. Some of those items include pocket knives, wristwatches, chewing gum, matches, sewing kits, ect. (OBrien, 1159). Along with things they kept close to them for physical use or mental use to keep them fighting, they go through hard times of losing crew members to killing people they believe seem innocent. In The Things They Carried, a crew member was killed like watching a rock fall, or a big sandbag or somethingjust boom, then down and due to them all being so close, the death caused the crew members to be greatly affected. In a Soldiers Home, the main character, Kerbs, is greatly affected by the lack of support and honor given to him by his family and community members. He [Kerbs] found that to be listened to at all he had to lie which made him have a greater reaction to the lies about war (Hemingway, 1). His lies led him to believe that was actually what happened while in the war. In contrast to the main focus of both stories, even though they are both based around wars, they both happen in different kinds of settings. In The Things They Carried, the story takes place on the battlefield in war. It talks about what they go through on a daily basis and the actual situations they come in contact with. On the other hand, a Soldiers Home is based around soldiers coming home and how they are greeted and not greeted and how they are treated in their lives back home by the people in the community they live in. Both stories have a main focus on how soldiers feel, but it is very different within the placement of where their feelings are coming from in different situations. The Things They Carried goes more in depth about the mental and physical aspects of war because it is a longer story. It is more of an ongoing story continuing throughout a live war. In a Soldier's Home, the story is about soldiers coming home from war and the absence of honor from the community. Karris, there are many possible backgrounds of the hymn as the large number of studies into the New Testament put forth. Some of them are Christ as the Gnostic redeemer, the Suffering Righteous, and finally, the ruler-worship that existed during the Greco-Roman period1. According to Martin and Martin, the early Christian message about Jesus should be considered in the political context of that time. If the Jews were blamed, it would diminish all chances of persuading more Jews to join the church, and blaming the Romans would only result in more atrocities3. As R. P. Martin rightly points out, the hymn may have had one meaning in its original form and a totally different meaning in the context of Paul’s letter. For example, there were the Jewish-Christians who possessed over-realised, triumphalistic eschatology. In order to oppose these ‘enemies of cross’, Paul intentionally stresses on the death on a cross. To counter them, Paul put forward the theory of Jesus who took the form of a servant and who emptie d himself and humbled himself4. This Jesus, according to the hymn, did not take advantage of the equality with God. Instead, He took the appearance of a man and was obedient till death. Achilles was the son of the mortal Peleus and the Nereid Thetis. He was the mightiest of the Greeks who fought in the Trojan War, and was the hero of Homer's Iliad. Thetis attempted unsuccessfully to make her son immortal. There are two versions of the story. In the earlier version, Thetis anointed the infant with ambrosia and then placed him upon a fire to burn away his mortal portions; she was interrupted by Peleus, whereupon she abandoned both father and son in a rage. Peleus placed the child in the care of the Centaur Chiron, who raised and educated the boy. In the later version, she held the young Achilles by the heel and dipped him in the river Styx; everything the sacred waters touched became invulnerable, but the heel remained dry and therefore unprotected. When Achilles was a boy, the seer Calchas prophesied that the city of Troy could not be taken without his help. Thetis knew that, if her son went to Troy, he would die an early death, so she sent him to the court of Lycomedes, in Scyros; there he was hidden, disguised as a young girl. During his stay he had an affair with Lycomedes' daughter, Deidameia, and she had a son, Pyrrhus (or Neoptolemus), by him. Achilles' disguise was finally penetrated by Odysseus, who placed arms and armor amidst a display of women's finery and seized upon Achilles when he was the only "maiden" to be fascinated by the swords and shields. Achilles then went willingly with Odysseus to Troy, leading a host of his father's Myrmidons and accompanied by his tutor Phoenix and his close friend Patroclus. At Troy, Achilles distinguished himself as an undefeatable warrior. Among his other exploits, he captured twenty-three towns in Trojan territory, including the town of Lyrnessos, where he took the woman Briseis as a war-prize. Later on Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks, was forced by an oracle of Apollo to give up his own war-prize, the woman Chryseis, and took Briseis away from Achilles as compensation for his loss. This action sparked the central plot of the Iliad, for Achilles became enraged and refused to fight for the Greeks any further. The war went badly, and the Greeks offered handsome reparations to their greatest warrior; Achilles still refused to fight in person, but he agreed to allow his friend Patroclus to fight in his place, wearing his armor.

The Literary Essay The word essay comes from the French word essayer â€Å"to try, to attempt† and still has this meaning in English, both as a noun and as a verb: Thats his first essay into the cattle business. For the non-professional writer, the high school student applying for college, for example, the â€Å"essay† is quite short. College entrance essays fall in the 500-700 word range. It’s rare that a high school student or college freshman is asked to write an essay any longer than 1.000 words. The greatest difference between the literary essay and the school essay is that the literary essay springs from the interests of the writer and can be a joy to write. The essay written as a school assignment is often regarded by the writer as drudgery. The Essay as Chore Two main reasons that essay writing is perceived as a chore by students are 1) they don’t want to do it 2) they’ve had insufficient reading experience. We learn our first language by hearing it spoken. We absorb the forms of written language by reading it. Students with limited reading experience will find essay writing more difficult than those who are avid readers. They have not internalized the patterns of written English. As a result, sentences written by ill-read students seldom vary from simple or compound. The most common coordinating conjunction found in this type of essay is and. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing within the framework of communication. Much popular material is written at this level. The vocabulary in student essays tends to fluctuate between the elementary and the exotic. Many, if not most, high school students acquire advanced vocabulary by studying word lists, not by encountering them in the context of books. As a result they often misuse words because of insufficient understanding of their meanings. Nevertheless, even without a strong reading background students can master the skill of producing a five-paragraph essay that is acceptable for most school assignments. The Five-Paragraph Essay The five-paragraph essay is often criticized for being too restricted; too cut-and-dried. It is said to inhibit creativity. Perhaps. But not all the young people being asked to write essays are gifted with creativity. And even the creative ones need to learn the basics of composition before soaring off to their creative heights. The five-paragraph essay remains a useful workhorse. Parts of the Essay Every essay has three main parts. In the five-paragraph essay they are arranged this way: Introduction (first paragraph): states the topic and theme; Briefly states three points to be made about the theme. Body (paragraphs 2-4): each paragraph expands and supports one of the points mentioned in the introduction. Conclusion (paragraph 5): restates the theme and sums up the argument in a satisfying way. The Hardest Part of Writing an Essay Essay writing guides can help, but the most important aspect of any writing assignment lies with the writer. Only the writer can answer this most important question: What do you want to say? Time spent in pinning down the topic and theme of your essay is never wasted. Don’t begin writing before you know 1. what you are writing about 2. what you want to say about it 3. to whom you are saying it With school assignments, the essay topic is often part of the assignment, but the student is usually given a choice of more than one. If at all possible, choose a topic in which you feel some interest. Have a destination. It’s not enough to say you’re writing about â€Å"war† or â€Å"civic responsibility† or â€Å"gun control.† What do you want to say about the topic? What do you want your reader to feel about it after having read your essay? One of the most frequent faults of freshman essays is that they leave the reader wondering â€Å"so what?† Who’s your reader? Picturing your reader in your mind as you write will influence your writing style. If a teacher is your target audience, nonstandard vocabulary and grammar are not an option. Supporting Statements A common fault among student writers is the failure to distinguish between a general statement and a supporting statement. Inexperienced writers often attempt to support one general statement with another general statement: My sister is annoying. She really bothers me. I can’t stand some of the things she does. All three of these statements are generalizations. Specific, concrete examples are needed to support general statements. General statement: My sister is annoying. Supporting statement: She eats my favorite cereal on the sly and then puts the empty box back into the cabinet.
